Covestor managers in the news

Covestor portfolio managers have been weighing in on their top stock picks and tax topics in major media outlets this winter.

US News & World Report featured Jane Edmondson and Barry Randall in its annual Top 15 Investing ideas for 2105.

Smartphones & Banks

Randall, who manages the Crabtree Technology portfolio, said buying stocks of smartphone suppliers was a smart idea.

“You don’t have to care [which smartphone] wins in the retail marketplace, because your company is already supplying the eventual winner,” Randall said.

Edmondson suggested taking a look at regional banks.

“The ongoing housing recovery has improved the quality of their balance sheets, positioning them for growth,” said Edmondson, who runs the EQM Capital Mid Cap portfolio.

GameStop

US News & World Report also featured Jono Tunney in its Top 10 Consumer Stocks story last month.

Tunney picked GameStop Corp. (GME), which is one of the holdings in the 100-30 portfolio managed by Tunney and his team.

Apple (AAPL) continued to crop up in the news this season.

Bob Freedland, who manages four Covestor portfolios, wrote about using Apple as a deflation hedge in Benzinga and Barry Randall penned a column for MarketWatch on the Apple iCar.

“As both a car buff and a tech investor, I’d love to see Apple give it a try. And it’s equally easy to make a case for Apple succeeding,” Randall wrote.

Tax Time

Tax topics have also been on the top of many people’s reading lists recently.

Charles Sizemore told Main Street readers to invest their tax refunds in Individual Retirement Accounts.

Sizmore manages three Covestor portfolios, including two available to IRA investors.

“With the average tax refund yielding $3,000, investors who put that amount toward an IRA or Roth IRA will have reached about half of the annual contribution limit, giving them a head start on their retirement savings for the year,” said Sizemore.
