Giving Thanks – and not just at Thanksgiving

By: Neerja Caprihan

The power of starting, and even ending, each day with a sense of gratitude is unmatched. All wellness coaches say it, as do all religious masters. Its benefits have been proved through research1 too. And if you still don’t believe it, try it. When it comes to finding the perfect tool to kickstart a productive day and fill it with positive, happy vibes, a simple gratitude journal is just as motivating and effective, if not more, than a to-do list on the smart apps.

One only ever needs to pick up a newspaper or tune into a news channel to get a reality check. Simply put, it is quite a chaotic world that surrounds us. More often than not, senseless words and apathetic actions of a selected few across the world incite feelings of rage, despondency and exasperation that shatter one’s mental peace and make one question all notions of progress of humanity. At such times, it becomes important to reset our focus and develop the art of dissociating music from noise amidst all the sounds we hear. That’s where gratitude comes in. It’s the simplest of everyday magic wands, amongst whatever else works for us – great food, soulful music, a good walk/ run/ workout, catching up with a bestie, curling up with a book, and so on.

Thanksgiving is one of those special days that reminds us to be grateful for all the obvious and not-so-obvious blessings in our life. This Thanksgiving, let’s celebrate this superpower that all of us possess. The ability to refuel and re-energise ourselves day after day with a simple minute of mindful gratitude. There can be much to be thankful for.

The bounty of nature’s harvests. Morning sun. Fresh breeze.

The love and trust of family and friends. Good health. Fulfilled dreams.

The comforts of everyday living. A passion to pursue. A home to come back to.

Progress of the nation. Supportive community. Evolving mindsets.

The list is endless.

Go on then and try this. Start your day with gratitude, and a cup of your favorite coffee or tea. The combination is unbeatable!
