Symbiosis At Work on May Day

By: Neerja Caprihan

Symbiosis may not have made much sense in the classroom biology lessons, but it turned out to be a principle that actually plays out in life more often than we think. Here’s a refresher that takes one back to school.

We see plenty of examples of parasitic relationships in the world. They are ones that drain the positive energy from people, families, organizations, ecosystems, and even countries as one zooms out. The opposite is true for the more life-affirming mutualistic relationships. They result in healthier bonds, happier workplaces and fulfilling lives. resulting in higher positivity and productivity for all involved.

Give and take is the simplest form of this self-sustaining barter system. The underlying theory is the bedrock for the functioning of societies and nations. Consider the fact that most countries lay down rights and responsibilities for the citizens. While democratic governments commit to upholding rights, the complementary duo of rights and duties exists in some form in most structured societies.

No one forgets their rights. But this International Workers’ Day (or Labor Day), let’s remember our duties a little better. In a diverse and disparate world, it is even more important to look after everyone who renders the society a service. It’s important to treat all workers well and provide them with due care and support. Why not make Socially Responsible Investing a part of your plan? In fact, we have a dedicated Fair Labor and Thriving Communities portfolio that answers to this sensibility. You do not have to stop there! We have a variety of portfolios that will appeal to you.

Because together we all count. That togetherness in turn, powers civilization and makes this world work.

After all, it’s only humanity that makes us humans.

And that’s also when the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts.

The ESG variants of the Socially Responsible Investing portfolios use an Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) investment strategy. Such a strategy could limit the types and number of investment opportunities available to this portfolio, lead the portfolio to underperform a portfolio without an ESG focus or with a distinct ESG focus, and result in the portfolio investing in securities or industry sectors that underperform the market as a whole or foregoing opportunities to invest in securities that might otherwise be advantageous to invest in. Interactive Advisors could also be unsuccessful in creating a portfolio investing in stocks of companies or ETFs made up of companies that exhibit positive or favorable ESG characteristics and the ETF manager (or the provider of the index the ETF seeks to track) may not succeed in selecting issuers that exhibit positive or favorable ESG characteristics in constructing the ETFs.
