Can You Feel The Heat?

By: Neerja Caprihan

The world is in the grip of scorchers. The word has diverse meanings, and right now all of them seem to be playing out actively in the global arena.

A scorcher is a day of extreme sun and heat. What was hitherto an experience reserved for tropical countries in peak summer, is now making its presence felt in more temperate lands. The media is abuzz with news regarding the heat wave, currently engulfing the European countries. It is bringing life, lives and living to a halt and continues to cause mayhem. The conditions are making governments and administrations scurry to find quick-fix solutions to all kinds of current and imminent breakdowns. Neither the people nor the infrastructure is adequately prepared for this heat dome. It is man-made to a larger degree than any of us would like to admit. Scientists and environmentalists have, after all, been crying hoarse, and justifiably so, about the long-term effects of climate change for years now.

In British English, a scorcher refers to something that is extraordinary or sensational. It could be a piece or writing or a movie, or a sporting action. One cannot but take note of the ongoing World Cup where the sporting action yields something along the lines of a scorcher of a kick every now and then. That’s a scorcher we generally don’t mind. As long as it isn’t from the opponent’s team though!

Simply put, a scorcher is something severe. It can even describe a harsh, withering remark or a blistering critique. In the olden days, this was reserved for describing the work of incisive journalism and literary criticism. Social media has changed that dramatically. An unbridled confidence, and the relative safety or sometimes anonymity, of expressing thoughts that can reach hundreds in a shot, has brought these kinds of scorchers out in the open.

The climate has indeed changed, in more ways than one.

And yet, there are several ways to stand your ground where your beliefs and convictions are concerned. With our Socially Responsible offerings and technology that facilitates your preferences or choices in investments, we continue to make investing more fulfilling for you.
