A New Day for Old Lakes

By: Neerja Caprihan

“This lake exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty.” – Percy Bysshe Shelley

Nature has an ability to draw you in, to lose oneself in its breath-taking aura. Be it forests, or mountains, or canyons, or diverse water bodies. There is something remarkably calming and yet evocative about being under their spell. The unbounded joy that such places bring to many people finds expression in prose, poetry, songs, dances and miscellaneous other art forms.

While oceans and seas have their share of adventurous admirers, lakes have their own loyal fan base. Where even a fairly ordinary lake can see throngs of walkers, cyclists, photographers, bird-watchers, artists and children, the more outstanding ones attract droves of tourists in addition. Their charm is easy to see and feel. And so one would agree that fitness and sports enthusiasts cannot make a better choice – doing what makes them healthy and happy, in a place that multiplies that happiness with its vibes. What is more, most of these places are also the perfect spots for exploring peace and spirituality via yogic meditation.

However, like everything reeling under the effects of environmental degradation and climate change, we are losing these captivating lakes1 all over the world. Consider the number of lakes2 that have become polluted or have shrunk in area, dying a slow death with each day. The causes are many – climate change, pollution, mindless development and more – human activity and apathy in one way or another.

The UN has officially declared August 27th as World Lake Day to raise awareness about the importance of lakes and encourage their conservation. This new observance was established through a UN Resolution3. The first World Lake Day will be observed on August 27, 2025

Here’s an interesting thing a department of conservation did to protect their lake. The visitors are asked to wipe their shoes before visiting the lake4. In many cultures, taking off a shoe is a sign of respect. While taking the shoes off at every lake may neither be desirable nor practical, we can do well to adopt the underlying feeling of respect. Let’s show some regard for nature’s water bodies, and translate that into their care and maintenance with mindful living.

How can we invest in a better planet? Glad you asked. It’s a question we’ve already got covered.
