No dream too big, or too big to dream?

By: Neerja Caprihan

THE elections are finally over. They have had a large part of the world on tenterhooks for the past few weeks. This blogpost does not have anything to do with them though. However, what is useful for the purpose here, is a quote that was part of the new President’s victory speech1 8 years ago, with the keywords ‘dream’ and ‘big’.

“No dream is too big…”

Hold onto that thought while we move on from ‘big’ to ‘small’. World Children’s Day is celebrated on 20 November to commemorate the ‘Declaration of the Rights of the Child2 by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1959. The date does vary across countries. For the children themselves, the day is meaningful only in terms of the pampering they receive at the hands of their carers, parents or educators. So it boils down to the goodies and gifts, the sweets and savories, and all the fun and frolic that goes with it. As all celebrations invariably do. That’s the joy of being a child. The pleasures of life stay small and simple.

Childhood is a word that evokes a raft of emotions and memories. It’s also one thing that is common to all adults, everywhere in this world. Which means, everyone everywhere can relate to childhood. It is an age associated with the delights of innocence, simplicity and adventure. It’s that magical age when goals are uninhibited and timeless, and dreams are ambitious and unfettered. Most of us grew up inspired enough to take that road less traveled and not put an expiry date to the dreams. And yet some of us ended up somewhere we didn’t either want or plan to be.

That’s life of course, but dwelling on that thought takes us away again from the point being made here – that we were all children once upon a time. Why not revive that spirit of exploration and adventure? Why not keep things simple even now? We can still dream – small and big dreams – and follow them through. Even if it means we need to turn around to change the path despite having come a long way down a particular road. Each one gets to decide if that’s immature, or brave.

It’s an irony though that all every single child ever wants, is to grow up. And all most adults want is to be a child again. Let’s not conclude that dreams and goals have a shelf life.
