The United Nations observes December 11 as International Mountain Day1. The observance of this day marks an acknowledgment of the need to look after mountains and their communities all over the world. International Mountain Day 2024 seeks to build awareness and draw attention to the welfare and empowerment of mountain communities through a focused approach:
“Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation, adaptation and youth.”
Mountains are not just the most thrilling adventure sites, or majestic subjects of the most charming pictures, but also the quiet stalwarts of a nation’s security force. They have played a crucial role in the making of history of kingdoms and nations. They are pivotal determining factors for the climate, the ecology, the flora and fauna, and the natural resources of adjoining areas. Their contribution in the life and sustenance of the communities that have built around them is emotional, psychological and material. Mountains are the mainstay of the heritage, the culture, the livelihoods, the well-being and the future of all people, no matter how physically far or near they might be.
The three-pronged approach of Innovation, Adaptation and Youth, is simple and sensible. It hinges upon the three keywords that make or break any enterprise anywhere, and power the success or longevity of any business or venture.
- Innovation is key when solving precarious problems that have multiple constraints but far-reaching consequences, with a smart use of limited resources at hand.
- Adaptation is how all living beings have survived, and in fact, thrived in the most adverse conditions – it takes as much mental fortitude as physical to emerge stronger.
- Youth, as any hope for tomorrow depends upon the generation that makes up tomorrow. For this generation to then run the show, it is vital that they respect their roots, understand ground realities, and get involved early on in helping take care.
