It’s strange how the same or similar objects can trigger different thought processes in different individuals. Just the other day, on a visit to a doctor, the sight of a big stroller triggered joyful vibes and childhood memories in my younger companion. At the same time, I caught myself staring at a wheelchair as the reality of advancing years and fragile mortality took over my imagination. The third member of my family was intent at staring out of the windows, mentally checking out the latest cars in the carpark!
Wheels are easily one of mankind’s more useful inventions. Artifacts from ancient civilizations have shown different examples of wheels and their evolution. Not only did they revolutionize the concept of transportation, but they have in turn been the building blocks of an amazing amount of gadgets and machines that have helped humanity. From potter’s wheels to cogwheels, and from solid wheels in stone or wood to sleek spoked wheels, the interest and advancements in the world of wheels has been steady. Even if it’s a flying car, that made it to the recent news. (It does have wheels, yes). For some of us with a funny bone, and possibly silver hair, the Flintmobile is still one of the earliest memories of cool vehicles!
And then there are wheels in symbolism. It is employed meaningfully and reverentially across several religions, cultures and countries as a powerful metaphor to represent cyclicity. Also known as the ‘chakra’, it is frequently mentioned in Eastern traditions spanning spirituality, theology, history, mythology and yogic practices. The cyclical nature of the seasons and the calendar is most closely felt in the form of steadily advancing years that we experience in our own families and lives.
As we navigate all the milestones on this road of life, we need to prepare ourselves for it all. This begins from the early years when we shop around for strollers as we start a family, the middle years when we buy bikes and cars as we live family life to the fullest, and finally the twilight years when needs of comfort, care or contingency take over (even if a wheelchair is never needed). But if you do not have your finances in place, this process of bringing up a family and ensuring a comfortable life for all through to your retirement years can be a challenging ride.
So whether you are just starting off in your careers or counting down to the end of successful ones, you need to give financial planning a serious thought. Goal-setting can be a key ingredient in making sound investing decisions. Follow this up with smart strategies and disciplined approaches that help you prepare for all reasons and seasons.
