I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the significance of Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, a day marking the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.
On June 19, 1865, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to proclaim the freedom of all enslaved individuals. This momentous occasion served as a transformative milestone, beginning a new chapter in American history.
As we observe Juneteenth, let us reflect on the ongoing fight for justice and equality. It is an opportunity for us to engage in conversations about our shared history, amplify the voices and experiences of marginalized communities, and work towards building a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
May this Juneteenth be a time of remembrance, celebration, and a renewed commitment to creating a more just and equitable society. Together, let us embrace the values of freedom, unity, and compassion that Juneteenth embodies.
