A core equity portfolio – Vista IM’s new Covestor model

John Frankola is the founder of Vista Investment Management, a Pittsburgh, PA based registered investment advisor that manages assets for high net worth individuals and institutional clients. As of January 2011, the firm has approximately $40 million under management. John has 33 years of experience in investment management, and previously held positions as Research Director and Senior Portfolio Manager at a regional investment firm. John has a BS and MBA and is a CFA Charterholder. He’s married with three adult children and his interests include tennis, platform tennis, travel, and music.

Vista Investment Management runs Covestor’s new Core Holding model, which employs a Core Equity investment strategy. The portfolio aims to be highly diversified, with exposure to virtually all major equity sectors. Market timing does not play a significant role in Vista’s investment process. Here’s how John describes the model’s allocation discipline:

Vista seeks exposure to all major industry sectors, growth and value stocks, large and small companies and international markets. Although exposure may vary, large U.S. companies will typically comprise approximately 40% of the portfolio, mid and small companies will also represent about 40%, and international (including emerging markets) will equal about 20% of the portfolio. The portfolio will typically hold 25 to 30 positions. Rebalancing is done on an ongoing basis.

Current top positions include Alliance Data Systems (ADS), Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR) and Goldman Sachs (GS).
